Set & Costume Department Visit To ABC’s “The Middle”!

By  |

The Middle is now on Tuesdays! New Season Starts Oct 11

Last month I got to visit the set and wardrobe department of ABC’s “The Middle”! Have you seen the show? It’s hilarious! I also had a very quick “hello” to the cast – Atticus Shaffer, Charlie McDermott, Patricia Heaton, and Neil Flynn! I gotta tell you, Neil Flynn is TALL. Like super tall. I’m 5’6″ and he is head and shoulders above me.

Two-time Emmy-winner Patricia Heaton stars in this warm and witty single-camera comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations, on the season premiere of “The Middle” on its new night, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11 (8:00-8:30 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network. Middleaged, middle class and living in the middle of the country in Orson, Indiana, Frankie Heck is a harried wife and mother of three who uses her wry wit and sense of humor to get her family through each day intact. Frankie works as a dental assistant, and her unflappable husband, Mike, is manager at the local quarry and her sardonic partner in the daily grind that is raising their average – yes, most definitely average – family.

Heading onto a television set is always funny – it looks like a house, but there are little things different, like the family pictures are photoshopped and duplicated throughout the home. Also, there’s that no ceiling thing.

We got to visit the costume department. Costumer Julia Caston is the whiz behind some unforgettable get-ups, like Sue Heck’s Crayon Costume. She explained a little about the department – how they get much of their clothing in department stores, there are multiples of the same pieces, and that YES – the actors wear the clothing more than once in the show.

Each outfit pulled for an episode is tagged with the character name along with a photo. While you may think that many of the clothing pieces look the same – and you are right – there are SO many pieces to choose from. Julia takes things into consideration such as the situation the character is in, what other actors are wearing, and the season.

Each character has a specific “look” – like Patricia Heaton’s “Frankie” wears a lot of pastel prints and sweaters….

…while Atticus Shaffer’s character Brick is almost never seen without stripes….

…Sue, played by Eden Sher sort of follows in her mom’s footsteps style-wise, but prefers to take her own risks, like floral jeans.

But there are literally hundreds of pieces for each character.20160921_114110

It was pretty amazing!
